There are many economic interests in the Riviera Maya, and it is an important source of funding for Mexico. There is also a large expatriate population from Canada and the United States investing heavily in the area. Authorities and companies invest a lot of resources to guarantee security in this area.

You will find a lot of security on the streets and especially in the tourist areas, but as in any destination you go to, we recommend you not to leave your belongings alone.

5 things you Must do in Playa del Carmen

1. Rio Secreto Natural Reserve

Rio Secreto, or the “Secret River,” is a series of caves carved out by the flow of an ancient subway river in Mexico. While the reserve is most famous for its large, half-sunken cavern, a popular spot for snorkeling, you can also explore eerie passageways, swim in the river, and admire stalactites, stalagmites, and colorful mineral formations.

5. Mayan Ruins of Cobá (Cobá Archaeological Zone)

In the heart of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula lie the ruins of Coba (Coba Archaeological Zone), an ancient Mayan city considered one of the most important settlements in Mesoamerican history. During its heyday between 500 and 900 A.D., Coba was home to 50,000 residents and was the central terminus of the complex Mayan road system. The jungle site is still being excavated, but visitors can experience the already discovered remains of the rubble, or stone causeways, as well as a number of engraved and sculpted monuments.
